Exhibition on view September 21 - November 7, 2014
Deborah Blau’s work follows a long tradition of aesthetic theory of the Sublime, or fearsome, in nature. In the representation of American landscape, really in its infancy in the early nineteenth century, the application of the Sublime was virtually unprecedented, and moreover accorded with a growing appreciation of wildness. However, this long standing fascination with the Hudson wilderness theme is subverted or recalculated by Blau. Her feminine, and sometimes dark and intimate explorations in a limited palette cast a new shadow over this long standing aesthetic dialogue.
